At Trekenner School, we believe that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world. Such an understanding is essential for children to become good local and global citizens.
Our science curriculum is focused on teaching children essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses in science. Through developing an understanding of core knowledge and concepts, children at Trekenner will be able to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
Enquiry based teaching and learning is central to the delivery of science at our school. Pupils are taught how Science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse cause and effect. Lessons will encourage rich questioning which stimulates thinking and makes children want to find the answers to real life problems. We believe that by sparking children’s curiosity in this way, they will not only acquire the necessary knowledge but also understand its value, enjoy the experience of working scientifically and sustain their interest in learning it. Children at Trekenner school will be exposed to all five types of scientific enquiry: observation over time, research, pattern seeking, classifying and identifying and comparative/fair testing. Additionally, they will engage in high quality enrichment opportunities such as local STEM projects, visits from organisations such as the explorer dome and other opportunities through our links with Callington and Launceston College.
